HIGH/SCOPE INDONESIA
Looking back at 1996, Mrs. Antarina S.F. Amir and several
colleagues who shared her view decided to introduce High/Scope approach to
education to Indonesia. Her interest in having a better system for education
started when she was still a post-graduate student in America, when for the
first time she heard her lecturer read the poem “Flowers are Red” by Harry
Chapin (you can visit
www.harrychapin.com to read about this poem). The poem was and is very
inspiring to her and in line with the education system she wanted.
When she went back to Indonesia, she heard that poem being
read from a radio station. The station was airing a school and its program.
Voíla, finally she found a right school for her son. That school was a school
that used the High/Scope model and located in Jalan Gereja Theresia. A year
later, the management of the school decided not to use the model anymore. Mrs.
Antarina Amir and Mrs. Julie Bambang then decided to take over the ownership of
the license.
The first school – it was an early childhood educational
program – was established in August 1996 in Jl. Metro Pondok Indah Kav. I/33
Pondok Indah - South Jakarta. The grand opening, however, was held on September
29, 1996, which we mark as the anniversary of High/Scope Indonesia.
At that time, it was not very easy to introduce a new program
such as this as many people were reluctant to change, especially when it
involved educational method. The concept of active learning is rather
controversial in comparison to traditional teaching approach that concentrates
on direct teaching. While active learning provides a lot of experiences and
choices of people, materials, events and ideas, direct learning teaches students
through sequenced activities with limited options.
High/Scope Indonesia have been opened in Jakarta (6 units &
one more unit is coming soon in Senayan City), Medan (1 unit), and Bali (1
unit). Read more »
